original run: March - June 2014
number of episodes: 26
my rating: 3.5 stars
synopsis from viki.com:
If someone were to do a scientific study, there probably were a lot of over-exuberant celebrations of South Korea’s 2002 World Cup win. High school sweethearts Jang Gook (Lee So Yeon) and Yoo Joon Soo (Namgoong Min) were two of them. After their mischievous night, Gook gets pregnant and the two try to marry but ultimately are forced to break up due to strong opposition from both families. Gook ends up moving to the United States and changes her name to Jang Dal Rae. Joon Soo goes from being the son of a wealthy family to becoming the breadwinner for his family as they live paycheck-to-paycheck. When Dal Rae and Joon Soo meet up again 12 years later and get hopelessly entangled in each other’s lives, what will become of the former high school couple? “Wild Chives and Soy Bean Soup: 12 Years Reunion” is a 2014 South Korean drama series directed by Kim Do Hyung.
Wild Chives and Soy Bean Soup popped up in my Netflix 'because you watched...' section under the title of 12 Year Reunion. I LOVE k-dramas with childhood romance that rekindles in adulthood so I could not pass this up. I looked it up first to see it's original title and I came across some info that the show was originally supposed to be 50 episodes but it was cancelled. Good thing I read that first because if not I would have been even more devastated about the ending.
What I liked:
Yoon So-Hee and Lee Won-Geun: I LOVED these two! They had great chemistry and were amazing as the younger Jang Gook and Yu Joon-Soo. I can understand why the show is so popular despite the ending and it is definitely because of these two and their wonderful performance in the first 14 episodes. I will be looking up both actors to see what other dramas they're in.
The way Jang Gook and Yu Joon-Soo met again as adults: I thought it was so good. So unexpected and funny. The first couple episodes of them as adults was great.
***MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD***
What I didn't like:
When the series broke off into the two lovers all grown up, there were a lot of new story lines started that were never finished because the series was cancelled. I think it took too long for the stories to build up and people got bored. I know I got bored at some point.
Just when it was getting good it ended:
WHY just WHY. I know why but still. It's so disappointing. I really wanted to see what would have happened if Yu Joon-Soo found out that Joo Da-Hae was the cause of Jang Gook's miscarriage. I was just waiting for that to happen and it never came. Even when Da-Hae and Jang Gook had their moment when they confronted each other was dull. Also, what would have happened if Joon-Soo's mom found out what Jang Gook was craving during the pregnancy. There are just so many unanswered questions.
The ending was cute though, the way they looked at their phones when their moms called and didn't answer.
Overall, like so many other viewers, I just wanted more. It ended too soon. I give 5 stars to the first half with the young lovers and to the first 3 episodes of them as adults. After that it went kind of downhill.
